FINDING THE RIGHT PRINTER INK CARTRIDGE
Information is power, and when it comes to choosing ink cartridges, knowing what the similarities and differences between the various types in terms of page yield, print quality, cost, reliability and environmental impact are, will help you make your choices.. It’s also important to know that there isn’t one type of cartridge that is the right one – but rather the right cartridge for an individual requirement.
The three types are OEM ink cartridges (original equipment manufacturer), compatible replacement cartridges (otherwise known as generics) and refurbished or remanufactured cartridges. These can all be purchased from office supply stores or online from specialist website (often at a cheaper price), so before ordering, it’s worth doing a little research.
Original equipment manufacturer cartridges (OEM)
These are genuine, original ink cartridges. These carry the brand name of the manufacturer (the printer company) or their licenced partner, such as HP, Canon, Brother etc. They are high quality, but are also the most expensive option.
Some consumers are under the impression that their printer warranties will be invalidated if they use generic or remanufactured ink cartridges, but legal precedent has been set and manufacturers cannot void any warranty of any device based on the use of printer consumables.
Compatible ink cartridges
These are unbranded cartridges which are manufactured to OEM specifications by third parties. The majority of these are made from all new components, but the composition of the inkjet or toner cartridge will be stated on the packaging.
They can retail at up to half or a third of the cost of OEM cartridges, but users need to check that they are fully compatible with their printer model otherwise problems could arise. An experienced cartridge retailer will be up-to-date with industry views and user reviews on the performance and quality of the various generic cartridges and will be able to give purchasing advice. Consumers need to take care that they choose one that is compatible with their model of printer.
{Remanufactured (refurbished) cartridges}
These are genuine OEM cartridges that are refilled by authorised organisations after having been used – they are thoroughly cleaned, tested, parts replaced where necessary and refilled with the same ink formulation – and then released back to market. A guarantee of quality is provided where the remanufacturer is certified by the ISO (International Standardisation Organisation.
From a cost perspective, these are cheaper than OEM cartridges but more expensive than compatible cartridges – plus they are an environmentally friendly choice.
Refilled ink cartridges
Empty cartridges can also be refilled. An alternative is to purchase a ink-filling kit that you can use at home. This is the cheapest way of getting ink cartridges but it comes with disadvantages. it can be messy, time-consuming and the end result is not always perfect or consistent
Understanding the differences between the different types of new and used ink and toner cartridges is invaluable, say Perth cartridge supplier, Printerfuel.. By inspecting the packaging to ensure the origins of the cartridges,and by knowing what you get and what you pay for – will save any disappointment later. Cheaper sometimes means inferior – and spending less may eventually cost more.
