PRINTING REALLY MAKES YOU THINK INK
Before you go out and buy a new printer, you may want to first take a look at what goes into them. In other words, investigate what printer ink cartridges or toner ink that will be required for the various printers ... and only then make your decision.
These days, some entry level printers cost virtually the same as a new ink cartridge. Some people even think they should be encouraged to buy a new printer by being offered a free one when they purchase a new ink cartridge!. Many manufacturers are actually selling printers at below cost and it’s very easy to be tempted by the amazing affordability of these machines. The major cost for the consumer (and the real profit for the manufacturers) is in the ink cartridges.
Ink cartridges aren’t all the same price. Because there is a significant cost differential between the different brands, doing some research before buying will pay handsome rewards. Check out the advantages and disadvantages (in terms of cost and performance) of each brand before you decide.
Apart from the difference in cost, not all cartridges are manufactured in the same way By way of example, some cartridges only have one ink per unit whilst other types have all the colours in one cartridge. This has implications in terms of cost and performance – ie. when one colour is used up, then the whole unit has to be replaced.
And although generic cartridges and reconditioned or refilled units are far cheaper than branded cartridges, the printer manufacturers warn against using them . They also claim that printers and photocopiers etc may not be covered by any warranties if generic or refilled cartridges are used instead of the manufacturer’s own brand.
Try and get a handle on what your printing needs are before you buy a new printer. It may actually make sense to buy two printers (one for colour printing and one for ordinary everyday black and white printing). A cost effective option is to look for printers that have a lower (DPI) dots per inch coverage as they will use less ink.
And when you’re buying a new printer or cartridges, try and remember the environment. With nearly 400 million cartridges thrown away every year, the impact on the environment is huge.
Cartridges contain lots of plastic but not a lot of actual ink. The average cartridge that goes into a regular home printer contains only around 8ml of ink – but the whole unit is big enough to make a sizeable dent in your bank account and takes up a sizeable space in landfill..
A word of caution from a Perth ink cartridges supplier, Printerfuel is to stop and think...before you ink. They suggest taking time to do a bit of research as to what your likely cartridge requirements will be, work out which brand will suit your needs (and your pocket) best and work out a system of recycling that will save you money in the short-term and save the planet in the long term.
